Discussion
Nathaniel Arnold bought this property in May 1910, and had the Arnold building constructed for his own use - auctioneer's rooms and two retail tenancy units on the ground and family accommodation on the first floor.

The buildings dominant feature is the ornate double-storey balcony veranda, fashioned in grand art nouveau patterned iron, is supported by six pairs of elaborately decorated columns. The floral tracery brackets support a continuous iron-grided framework broken by more floral motifs, below the veranda slab edge.

The ground floor still retains its original design. The western part is Arnold's original shop, with brass and glazed shop front. Ceiling mirrors over the entrance doors reflect the marble tessellated floor panel. The art nouveau theme is played through to the metal panel over the glazed teak door, which still has its original brass handles and kick plate.

An entrance lobby incorporating a well-crafted teak staircase with an elaborate newel post at its foot divides this shop from the two smaller ones. The other shop-fronts are in oiled teak set into large semi-circular rusticated stucco openings.
