Discussion
This library building is once of the finest 'international style' buildings to be produced in Zimbabwe during that age. A well proportioned building that balances material scale and function in one breathe. It was built in 1962 on a limited budget by Montgomerie and Oldfield architects, and was later awarded a Silver Medal by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Built in an open parkland, near the National Museum and High Court buildings, the buildings landscaping was designed to tie in well with its surroundings. Neglect in recent years has left the building in a bad state and the landscaping in need of desperate attention in order to give it the prominence it deserves.

The library has not been modified greatly during its lifespan. It was built of reinforced concrete with some brick infill and red terracotta treatment to external ground floor walls.
