Discussion

The
parliament buildings, were originally conceived as a hotel in 1895 by
two South African politicians, Daniel Mitchell and Robert Snodgrass. Although
it was partially completed the building - by this time know as Cecil building
- was commandeered the following year by the Rhodesian army as a barracks.
In 1896 Mitchell and Snodgrass had failed to repay their loan on the building and the government repossessed it, intending to turn it into a post office. However, the new Legislative Assembly took a liking to it almost immediately, and on 15 May 1899, it was taken over as the Parliament Building. The building has undergone several renovations - in 1969 it grew to six storeys. Ref. Deanna Swaney |
