Discussion
|
Above
the braided Save River, Birchenough Bridge rises mirage like from the
ruddy cactus, thorn and baobab scrub. A single arch structure it was built
in the early 1930's and ranked as the worlds third largest suspension
bridge.
Apart from its smaller size the 378m long bridge is an exact replica of Australia's famed 'Coat Hanger' - Sydney Harbour Bridge. It was designed by Ralph freeman, who was also the structural engineer for the Coat hanger. This strategic structure also appears on Zimbabwe's 20 cent coin. Ref. Deanna Swaney / The Author |
