On
a hill overlooking Harare, the dominating obelisk of Heroes' Acre serves
as a monument to the thousands of Zimbabweans who suffered and died during
the 14-year 'civil' war - Chimurenga II.
The site's( in total,140 acres) principle feature is a bronze statue of the 'unknown soldier', that stands opposite one of the levels leading up to the eternal flame and it's soaring obelisk. It holds the tombs of national heroes and is the future site of a war museum. A bas relief, depicts scenes from the dark days of the struggle. Despite its articulate use of polished granite cladding, and reinforced concrete structure this monument is however let down by its canonisation of dead heroes and preoccupation with military violence. The strong echoes of Leninist/socialist ideals also detract from the true function of this shrine. Ref. The Author |
